David Gustafson, Ph.D.

Dr. David Gustafson directs the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Center for Health Enhancement Systems Studies (CHESS), which includes the national program office for the Network for Improvement of Addiction Treatment (NIATx), and Center of Excellence on Active Aging Research (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality).

Dr. Gustafson has published over 270 reviewed publications including seven books. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of the Association for Health Services Research, the American Medical Informatics Association, the WK Kellogg Foundation and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, which he co-founded and was board vice-chair. He co-chaired the federal Science Panel on Interactive Communications in Health and serves on NIH's Dissemination and Implementation in Health Study Section.

Dr. Gustafson’s research interests focus on developing systems engineering tools to support sustainable individual and organizational improvement. His individual change research develops and tests computer systems to help people deal with significant issues affecting quality of life including addiction, cancer, and aging.

Dr. Gustafson has served on the National Advisory Council, US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, and has been part of the National Academy of Engineering and NIH Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health Study Section. He has been recognized with the 2011Translational Health Communication Scholar Award: DC Health Communication Conference; 2009 Award of Merit: University of Michigan College of Engineering; 2006 Blanket of Honor: Native American Connection; 2000 Robert A. Ratner Professorship in Industrial Engineering; and 1999 Instructor of the Year Award--Industrial Engineering Student Award.
